Digital Photo I: The Basics

"Action is eloquence."
— William Shakespeare

This introductory workshop is great for anyone who wants to discover the foundations and potential of digital photography.  No experience is necessary to get started.  You'll learn to master the manual functions of the new class of digital SLR cameras through a no-nonsense, real-world approach. This workshop is chock-full of practical knowledge that will put YOU in control of your camera, and not the other way around.

Over 8 weeks we'll be covering all the nuts-to-bolts aspects of exposure, shutter speeds, aperture, ISO, depth of field, motion blur, as well as comparing different lenses and the basics of composition.  Learn to shoot the classic way, starting in black & white, the favored choice of early and contemporary giants like Walker Evans, Irving Penn and Henri Cartier-Bresson.  Class instruction strongly emphasizes technical understanding and operating in the field, with weekly assignments and critique.  Students will also have the opportunity to participate in the monthly student exhibitions at Rabbithole to show off your best work.

You'll need to bring your DSLR camera and the camera's manual.  All Digital Photo I students will receive a free BkC field notebook and canvas tote bag.
